Last night was a big night for our Toronto Maple Leafs captain. Not only did the Leafs tromp all over their 7-1 loss to Carolina on Tuesday with an 8-1 win over the Islanders, but Mats Sundin now owns the #1 spot on the Leafs All-Time Points Leader and Leafs All-Time Goals Leader lists. With just one goal.

Earlier in the game, Tomas Kaberle scored in the second period and they gave Mats Sundin an assist. But he was quick to tell the officials that he shouldn’t get the assist because he never touched the puck. This was corrected at the beginning of the third period. The crowd had already gave him a standing ovation and they were disappointed. But they only had to wait a few more minutes before Sundin scored and there was no denying the standing ovation.

It was a weird goal. Sundin only meant to pass to a teammate, but it bounced off an Islander and into the net.

At the end of the game, the crowd went silent as the Leafs arena announcer Andy Frost called out the three stars of the game.

“Third star, from your Toronto Maple Leafs, Mats Sundin!”

I was confused. Only third star? I would’ve thought first for sure, but then Matt Stajan had a 4-point night with one goal and three assists, and Andrew Raycroft was solid.

“Second star, from your Toronto Maple Leafs, Mats Sundin!”

Ahh, now I caught on. And sure enough, Mats Sundin was named all three stars.

A fantastic night for a fantastic captain.
