Leafs Acquire Pair from Sharks

(June 22, 2007) – John Ferguson, vice-president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Friday afternoon that the hockey club has obtained goaltender Vesa Toskala and forward Mark Bell from the San Jose Sharks. In exchange, the Sharks will receive Toronto’s first-round draft pick in either 2007 or 2008 or 2009, the Leafs’ second-round pick in 2007, and the Leafs’ fourth-round selection in 2009.

Toskala, 30, played in a career-high 38 regular season games in 2006-07 and posted a record of 26-10-1 with a 2.35 goals against average and .908 save percentage. He established career-highs in wins, and shutouts (4) this past season. In 78 career NHL games, all with San Jose, Toskala has fashioned a 65-28-10 record with eight career shutouts. The native of Tampere, Finland played 11 playoff games for San Jose in the 2006 NHL playoffs and posted six wins and five losses with a 2.45 goals against average with one shutout. Toskala was originally the Sharks’ fourth choice, 90th overall, in the 1995 Entry Draft.

Bell, 26, recorded 11 goals and 10 assists in 71 games during his first season in a Sharks’ uniform in 2006-07. He led the club with 83 penalty minutes. In 410 career NHL games he has scored 83 goals to go along with 89 assists and 537 minutes in penalties. He was originally Chicago’s first choice, eighth overall, in the 1998 Entry Draft.

The native of St. Paul’s, Ontario had his best season with the Blackhawks in 2005-06 when he placed second in team scoring with 48 points (25g, 23a). He led the team in powerplay goals that season with 11.

Yeah, okay. I won’t do any judging of either until I see them in action for the Leafs.
